BRITISH HISTORY IN THE CRUCIBLE OF SOUTH AFRICA:
THE CRADLE OF THE NATION TOUR

Zulu culture, Anglo Zulu war, Anglo Boer war, spectacular scenery, big game.

5 days, 4 nights.
Departing Durban; return to Durban

This is a tour of great variety and scope, revealing the soul of South Africa as we spend 5 unforgettable days tracing the origins of the “rainbow nation” comprising Zulu, Boer and Briton.

Day one
Clients are collected in touring vehicle and driven by their specialist historian guide up the north coast road, following the historic movement of British troops into Zululand at the start of the Anglo Zulu war in 1879. On the banks of the Tugela River, border between Natal and Zululand, refreshments are served while the origins of the conflict between Zulu, British and Boer in South Africa are presented. Herein lie the origins of the present political situation. Later today comes a talk on the history and culture of the proud Zulu nation. The drive through rolling hills to Eshowe and Melmoth is breathtaking and the entry over the Nqutu plateau to our boutique hotel perched in the cliff face is equally dramatic. (LD)

Day two
The morning is devoted to the battles of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift, the latter made famous in the epic film “Zulu”. Lunch is presented at Fugitive's Drift Lodge, and is followed by an account of the saving of the Queen's Colour, delivered on the cliffs overlooking the Buffalo River. Overnight as last night. (BLD)

Day three
The third strand enters the rope of history that we are weaving as we drive north into the arena of the Boer war of some 20 years later. An explanation of how and why it all began is given at the opening Battle of Talana. From there we progress to the town of Ladysmith, made world famous in 1900 by its 118 day siege. This entertaining small town boasts a comfortable lunch venue, a good museum relating to the siege and the war and a hill overlooking the town that offers a spectacular viewpoint, where the presentation is given. Our overnight stop is a small colonial style guest lodge with chalet accommodation, each with a viewing platform where wildife in the adjoining game park may be sighted over sundowners. The spacious colonial style dining room is host to a congenial supper with discussion stimulated by the experiences of the day. (BLD)

Day four
There is further opportunity today to enjoy the beautiful scenery of KwaZulu-Natal. The mighty Drakensberg Mountains form a spectacular backdrop to the west and contain the source of the mighty Tugela River that meanders through the steep rocky hills where four desperate battles were fought between Boer and Briton. Winston Churchill was captured nearby and a visit to the site where his armoured train was ambushed is part of our program. The highlight of the day is the tour at the summit of Spioenkop, arguably the most dramatic battlefield site in the world. Here Boers and Tommies fought to a standstill with heavy casualties on 24th January 1900. O/N as last night (BLD)

Day five
There is time for a drive through the Spioenkop Game Park where we could be rewarded by encounters with rhino, giraffe, buffalo and various antelope. We drive the scenic road back to Durban, visiting places of interest en route. (BL)
