A two or three day riding tour in
the veldt with a mule-drawn wagon for support
based at a working ranch - (suitable for novice riders.
This excursion is designed for the active family wishing to experience
a real taste of the open veldt of KwaZulu-Natal and some of the experiences
of the days before the internal combustion engine. Horse management
will demand some walking.
Day one:
Arrive at ranch by 11am and meet horses; mount up and with a picnic
in saddlebags and overnight baggage on the wagon, ride off into
the rugged terrain. The wagon will join up at the evening campsite
where there will be the chance to swim in the Tugela River. Evening
meal by the open fire and sleep beside the wagon under the stars.
Day two:
Wake to the rousing of the campfire and a cooked breakfast then ride
out into the open countryside following in the trail of the voortrekkers
and of some actions of the South African War of 1900. Picnic lunch
and then on to the evening campsite where the wagon will join up,
or back to the ranch for hot bath and meal on the stoep. Overnight
at the ranch.
Day three: similar to day two and terminating at the ranch with
an inclusive overnight.
Wildlife: The trail is not in a game reserve but there are wild animals
in the area and normal precautions should be taken.
Equipment: sleeping bags should be brought but can be rented with
notice; insect repellent is recommended; riding clothes (long sleeves
and trousers) and footwear for walking as well as riding; sunscreen
and a hat, gloves. Sleeping mats are provided.
