3 Days / 2 Nights
Day One
Depart from Durban early in the
morning and drive up through the magnificent
scenery of Tugela Ferry, passing through
villages throbbing with life and local colour.
This is the route followed by the British column
en route to Rorke's Drift, prior to the invasion
of Zululand in 1879. We stop briefly at the
Greytown Museum and then head on to Helpmekaar
and finally Dundee, to find our accommodation
for the night. (LD)
Day Two
Today we visit the battlefield
sites of Isandlwana, Rorke's Drift and
Fugitives' Drift. At Isandlwana the British and
Zulu clashed, this time to the detriment of the
British. From there we move on to Fugitives'
Drift for an account of the saving of the
Queen's Colour, as well as an enjoyable lunch.
During the afternoon we visit Rorke's Drift for
an account of the heroic defense of this outpost
against the onslaught of over 4000
Zulus. Overnight as last night.
Day Three
This morning we move 20 years
on to the Boer War battlefields. We visit the
town besieged for 118 days, Ladysmith, and drive
to the summit of Spioenkop Mountain. This blood
soaked acre is the battlefield site where the
British made a second attempt to break through
the Boer lines to reach Ladysmith. En route back
to Durban, we will stop at the site of the
capture of Winston Churchill on the armoured
train. (BL) |
